The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed on Thursday that the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Amendment Bill — which will restore J&K’s status as a full state — will be tabled in the Monsoon Session of Parliament beginning in July.
The commitment, made before the Supreme Court in November 2023, was reaffirmed in an affidavit filed this week after the court’s Constitution Bench noted that sufficient time had elapsed since the November 2024 assembly elections.
Political Context
The National Conference-led government in Srinagar under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has made statehood restoration its central demand, arguing that union territory status deprives J&K of the constitutional autonomy available to other states. The Centre’s decision ends a period of ambiguity that had strained Centre-state relations.
