The National Payments Corporation of India announced the activation of UPI across 12 new countries including France, Germany, Oman, and South Africa, bringing the total count of UPI-accepting nations to 34.

NPCI International CEO Ritesh Shukla said the organisation is targeting $100 billion in annual cross-border transaction volume through UPI by 2028, with the Indian diaspora, tourism, and trade corridors as the primary growth drivers.

What Changes for Users

Indians travelling to any of the 34 accepting countries can now scan QR codes at partner merchants using their regular UPI apps. Receiving end merchants are paid in local currency, with the forex conversion handled by NPCI’s banking partners. Charges are capped at 0.5% for international transactions.
