India’s first domestic semiconductor fabrication plant produced its inaugural wafer on Thursday morning, a moment that Prime Minister Modi called a “historic leap” in India’s journey towards technology self-reliance.
The Tata Electronics-PSMC joint venture in Dholera, Gujarat has cost approximately $11 billion to build and represents the largest single greenfield manufacturing investment in India’s history.
What the Plant Produces
The facility will initially produce 28-nanometre chips targeting automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics applications. While not at the cutting edge of global semiconductor technology — leading fabs now produce at 3nm — the 28nm node covers the vast majority of chips used in most everyday electronics and accounts for approximately 30% of global semiconductor demand.
